Nanao Ise is one of the two lieutenants of the 1st Division, formerly the lieutenant of the 8th Division. She first joined Gotei 13 when she was a little girl and enjoyed being read to by former 8th Division lieutenant Lisa Yadōmaru. Nanao is a very serious and pragmatic person (can be compared to that of Lisa Yadōmaru) which is at odds with her captain's silly antics.
