Cosplay Posing Tips - Photography at Cons

Ten tips for posing at cons and working with Yenra Photography in particular.

  1. Find the light - Practice finding sources of light like the brightness of the sky (if your nose points in directions of illumination, your face will be lit evenly). This is extra important when we are using found light at night. Be aware where the brightest sources of light are.
  2. Contrapposto - People always look better when they shift weight to one foot. If you make space between your body and your arm with say hand on hip, you will look more slender.
  3. Lookaway - When you look away, bring your eyes back - not all the way to me, but midway between where you would naturally look and me - then it's still a look away, but more color of your iris shows.
  4. Face reset - If you are tense about the camera, relax and reset by closing your eyes and opening them when you are rested. Or look away at something and think of a day at the beach and then look for the pose.
  5. Help friends - If you're waiting to be shot, help friends who are being shot by advising on adjustments (to hair, accessories, wardrobe) that may have fallen apart since the person was last in front of a mirror.
  6. Help photographer - If I'm using lighting (handheld or a reflector), take turns helping, so you help somone and they help you. How to know you are doing it right? Look at the person and adjust the light until they look best to your eyes.
  7. Acne no problem - There are so many things to stress over before a con, but don't let breaking out be one of them. When I prep photos, I won't touch a freckle or beauty mark, but acne, gone - you'd be hard pressed to find any in the pictures I share.
  8. Post process - Each picture I share gets 2 to 5 minutes of careful attention before I post it. The fast pictures we will already have in our phones. On the other hand, I need nudging, especially as one event overtakes another. I make successive rounds through events and keep picking out and prepping ones that are best. Never hesitate to nudge; remind me to go back to a particular event and day to see if more pictures from then can be prepped and shared.
  9. Character identification - If you can tell that I need help with a character/series ID, please help me out by messaging me or by commenting.
  10. Page to tag - Also help me out by letting me know if you have a Facebook Page to tag. If you recently made one, make sure that you change off of the default - Community type page to a people type like Artist. That way your page can be tagged in pictures.
